Introduction

For many men, growing a full dense beard may be difficult. For some the beard line may finish just above the jaw line and for others it may be higher up but patchier in places. Then there are those whoses beards’ grow asymmetrically. All of these factors can sometimes can have psychologically damaging effect on those who wish to grow a full beard. At American Aesthetic, our qualified surgeons are able to use the same techniques that they are able to use in hair transplantation for the scalp to help implant healthy follicles into the areas on your face all the while carefully paying close attention to the angle that the hair follicles are being inserted (which makes this a more complicated procedure than a regular hair transplant for the scalp) and in return help you achieve a fuller healthier looking beard.

Method

In order to give you the best possible results, our surgeons use the Sapphire FUE method while transplanting hair. In this method, a special sapphire blade (so named as the blade is made from sapphire) is used to open “channels” in the beard area prior to the transplantation of hair. When compared to more traditional steel blades, sapphire blades keep their sharp edge for longer periods of time.

Advantages of the Sapphire FUE method

• • As Sapphire blades have a smooth edge and a very sharp point, they cause less damage to existing hair follicles than steel blades. This is especially important when making incisions into an area which already has hair follicles present.
• • Sapphire blades are anti-microbial
• • Sapphire blades help facilitate a more natural look,reduce incidences of edema (swelling) occuring and can help the hair to be 30% denser.

Post-op care and what to expect

A beard transplant requires slightly more precision than a hair transplant mainly because facial tissue is more delicate and soft and greater precision is required when angling the hair follicles into the correct position. However, both the healing process and the result are faster for a beard transplant.

• • You may return home as soon as the procedure is complete. You will not be required to stay in hospital over night.
• • The area will be tender, red and sore after the procedure.
• • There may be mild swelling and bruisng present.
• • It will take between 7 and 14 days for you to recover. Normal activities can be commenced after 14 days.
• • You should get plenty of rest and minimize everyday activities until the day after the procedure.
• • Try not to touch your beard for the first 5 days after the procedure.
• • Avoid swimming pools, saunas and solariums for 4 weeks after the procedure.
• • Avoid sexual intercourse for a month after the procedure.
• • Try to sleep on your back to with your head elevated for the first week as this will decrease any swelling that may occur.
• • You may start shaving 3 weeks after the procedure.
• • You may find that the newly transplanted hair may fall out initially. This is absolutely nothing to worry about and all part of the process; the hair will grow back.

Beard care post-op

• • You are permitted to shower after the procedure; however, you should under no condition should you wash your beard or get it wet.
• • You are permitted to wash your beard 48 hrs after the procedure as long as you strictly follow the intructions given to you by either your physician or consultant.
• • Do not directly wash the transplant area with the use of a shower or tap water.
• • Washing itself should also be done very gently. The best method is to squeeze a little shampoo into your hand, lather it up well between your hands, and then carefully rub it into your hair.
• • Be careful not to scrub too much as this may dislodge the transplant grafts.
• • Be careful not to dislodge grafts with your finger nails.
• • Try to avoid using hair dryers for at least 2 weeks.
• • Beard products such as mousse, wax and hair spray can be used a week after the procedure but they should be washed out daily.

Are the results permanent?

The results are more longer lasting than permanent. All hair follicles have a lifespan and produce less hair as you age.

Will the hair that I have had transplanted fall out?

It is totally normal for the hair that has been transplanted to appear to fall out a few weeks after the procedure. This, however, is nothing to worry about as any hair lost will regrow between 3-4 months later. Once this has happened, the hair follicles will grow back maintaing the look they had before.

When can I return to work?

Depending on the nature of your job, you are generally able to go back to work 5-10 days after the procedure.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a procedure that can help eliminate those pockets of fat and thus help reshape your body. During this procedure a device known as a cannula is inserted in the fatty area below the epidermis so that it can suck out any unwanted fat. The areas treated most common by our male patients include the tummy, waist, back, chest chin and arms.

Six pack fat transfer.

Are you tired of the incredible amount of exercise that is required to maintain a well defined six pack? Then a six pack fat transfer may just be the thing for you. To begin with, your surgeon will remove as much fat that is needed from either your tummy, waist or thighs using liposuction and then reinject this fat directly into the muscles of the abdomen to give the appearance of a natural looking six pack without the exercise and sweat.

Occassionally, a patient may have so much fatty build up in a particular area that a simple liposuction procedure is no longer enough as by doing liposuction alone, the patient will be left with an excess of saggy skin. Hair transplant
