What Are Lip Fillers Made of?

Lip fillers are indeed composed of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance present in the skin. This makes it a low-risk option that is generally well-tolerated by the body. The Procedure

During a lip filler procedure, our skilled doctor will begin by applying a topical anesthetic to your lips. This numbs the area and ensures a comfortable experience. The anesthetic typically contains benzocaine, lidocaine, and tetracaine (BLT). After about 15 to 30 minutes, your lips should be fully numb. If you have a BLT allergy, our doctor may opt for a nerve block injection to numb your lips instead. This injection also takes around 15 to 30 minutes to take effect. Once your lips are numb, the doctor will use a thin needle to inject the lip filler into various parts of your lips, including the vermillion border, Cupid's bow, and oral commissures. You may feel a pinching sensation during the injections, but no pain. Your eyes may water a bit, but that's normal. On average, about 1 milliliter (or one-fifth of a teaspoon) of lip filler is typically used, and the needle doesn't go deeper than 2.5 millimeters into the skin. Throughout the procedure, an ice pack may be applied to your lips to minimize swelling and bruising. The entire process can take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours.

Post-Op care

• Use an ice pack for up to 10 minutes to reduce inflammation, pain and swelling.
• Do not wear lipstick, lip balm or any other product on your lips for at least 24 hours.
• Do not touch or pucker your lips, including kissing and sipping from a straw.
• Be careful while brushing your teeth.
• Make sure you drink plenty of water.
• Do not exercise for at least 24 hours after the procedure.
