What is a Brow Lift?

A brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that can reposition your forehead, raise the brow, and reduce wrinkles, giving you a more youthful appearance. As we age, our skin loses elasticity, and sun damage can weaken the skin, causing gravity to pull the brow down and resulting in wrinkles. Frown lines between the eyebrows and horizontal lines on the forehead can make us look serious or angry. Additionally, sagging of the outer brow can make us appear sad or tired. If you're looking to address these natural changes and achieve a more refreshed look, a brow lift may be a suitable option. Other names for a brow lift include forehead lift, forehead rejuvenation, browplasty, and temporal brow lift (lateral brow lift).

Who is a good candidate for the procedure?

When considering a brow lift, it's important to note that patients often experience drooping eyebrows and a heavy, tired appearance in their eyes. They may try to manually lift their lateral brow while looking in the mirror. Excess skin on the upper eyelids is also a common concern, and many patients are frustrated that their facial expression appears upset, angry, or tired, even when they don't feel that way. Additionally, subconscious frowning can contribute to these concerns.
As we age, the shape of our face becomes more circular due to mid-face drooping. If you have significant nasolabial folds, a surgeon may recommend combining a facelift with a brow lift. It's worth noting that asymmetry in the eyebrows can go unnoticed by the patient and is present in about one third of all cases.
While it is possible to elevate any brow, the surgeon will assess the amount of excess skin in the lateral canthus area. If there is significant overhanging skin near the crow's feet, it may be difficult to address with eyelid surgery alone, making a brow lift necessary. This is an important consideration, especially if the patient has pronounced drooping of the upper eyelids. The surgeon will make the appropriate choice based on your specific condition.

What happens during the procedure?

During a brow lift, the procedure is typically performed in either a hospital or an outpatient surgical center. To ensure your comfort during the procedure, you will usually be given sedation anesthesia through an IV in your arm, or in some cases, general anesthesia. The techniques used for a brow lift can vary depending on the desired results. The specific technique chosen by your surgeon will determine the location of the incisions and the resulting scars. Here are some common techniques:
1. Endoscopic brow lift: This technique involves making several small incisions behind the hairline. A long, thin tube with a light and a tiny camera is inserted through one of the incisions to view the underlying muscles and tissues. Using another incision, the surgeon lifts the forehead tissues and secures them in place with sutures, small screws, or another method. The incisions are then closed with stitches or clips.
2. Temporal brow lift: In this procedure, small incisions are made near the temples, just behind the hairline. Through these incisions, the surgeon lifts and repositions the tissues of the forehead.
3. Direct brow lift: This technique involves removing the skin above the eyebrows. It is typically performed in individuals with bushy eyebrows. The direct brow lift is a shorter surgery and can often be done using local anesthesia, which numbs only a specific area of the body.
4. Coronal brow lift: This procedure requires making an incision behind the hairline, extending across the top of the head from ear to ear or primarily on the top of the head. Through this incision, the surgeon lifts and repositions the forehead tissues.
These different techniques offer various approaches and incision placements to address different brow lift needs. It's important to consult with a qualified surgeon to determine the most suitable technique for your specific goals and concerns.

Post op care

1. Apply iced gauze pads (gauze pads dipped in ice water and wrung out) to the eyes and forehead for the first 48 hours to minimize swelling and discoloration.
2. Keep your head elevated to further reduce swelling. You can use a recliner or add an extra pillow on your bed for adequate elevation.
3. You'll have a dressing in place for approximately 24 hours. Our surgeons will provide instructions on how to remove the dressing before you leave the surgery center.
4. You can wash your face, but make sure to keep the dressing dry.
5. You may experience areas of decreased sensation or numbness on your forehead and scalp. This sensation will gradually return to normal over time. Be cautious to avoid any trauma or burns when using hot tools, such as curling irons or blow dryers, as well as warm packs and ice packs.
6. You can gently wash your hair three full days after surgery. It's best to use a baby shampoo or a clarifying shampoo to remove any ointment from your hair and scalp.
7. Avoid hair coloring or permanents for at least one month after the surgery.
8. It's advisable to avoid extreme physical activities, including athletic activities and intercourse, for a certain period of time. You can resume light walking three days after surgery, but aerobic exercise, weight training, and heavy physical activities should be avoided until further instructions from your surgeon.

Liposuction

As we age, lose weight or after we give birth, we may find certain pockets of fat are harder to remove than others through exercise and diet alone. Liposuction can help remove this fat by extracting it with a very strong vacuum.
