Upper And Lower Eyelid Surgery

What is eyelid surgery?

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a procedure that can improve the appearance of the eye area by reducing bagginess and removing excess skin from the upper and lower eyelids. As we age, our skin loses elasticity, leading to sagging and the accumulation of skin in the eyelids. Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, depending on the individual's needs. During the surgery, excess skin, muscle, and sometimes underlying fatty tissue are removed, or in some cases, repositioned. It's important to note that while blepharoplasty is primarily a cosmetic procedure, it can also have functional benefits for individuals whose sagging eyelids obstruct their vision. However, it's essential to manage expectations as blepharoplasty does not address issues such as dark circles under the eyes or facial wrinkles like crow's feet. To address these concerns, other surgical or nonsurgical procedures may be recommended, such as fat repositioning, filling under-eye hollows, or cheek lifts. Additionally, blepharoplasty can be combined with other facial surgeries like laser resurfacing or brow lifts to achieve comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

Who is a good candidate for the procedure?

Typically, people who are at least 30 years old, in good health, and without any eye conditions are considered suitable candidates. It's crucial to inform your healthcare provider about any existing eye diseases, such as glaucoma or dry eyes, as well as thyroid disorders, cardiovascular issues, high blood pressure, or diabetes.
Managing expectations is key when it comes to blepharoplasty. While the surgery can enhance your appearance and boost your confidence, it's important to understand that it won't result in a drastic transformation or alter your facial structure. Many individuals naturally have eyes that aren't perfectly aligned or appear to be different sizes due to asymmetrical features that develop during early stages of development. Therefore, it's vital to have a good understanding of your face and discuss your expectations with your surgeon before making a decision.

What is involved during surgery?

During an upper blepharoplasty, the surgeon will make incisions in the natural crease of the upper eyelid to remove excess skin and fat. These incisions are strategically placed to be hidden when your eyes are open. For a lower blepharoplasty, the surgeon will make an incision just below your lower eyelash line to remove excess skin in the lower eyelid. In some cases, a hidden incision inside the lower eyelid may be used to address lower eyelid issues and adjust fat distribution.

As there are medical and physical limitations as to how much fat can be safely removed and transfered, the procedure may not be suitable for those who are overweight.

Patients who had upper or lower blepharoplasty done with us also had some of the following done too. Contact one of our experienced patient coordinators to see what procedures would be best suited to you.

Liposuction

As we age, lose weight or after we give birth, we may find certain pockets of fat are harder to remove than others through exercise and diet alone. Liposuction can help remove this fat by extracting it with a very strong vacuum. Outside of traditional liposuction, we also provide vaser liposuction which uses ultrasonic waves first to breakdown fat cells before extracting them. This often leads to less damage being done to the remaining tissue and thus enabling a quicker recovery time. Liposuction is a procedure which can be performed on all body parts.

Tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Some of us are left with an excess of skin around our tummy area after losing a lot of weight or giving birth. As this skin cannot be lost through exercise or diet alone, a ‘tummy tuck’ can be used to surgically remove the excess skin to give your tummy a thinner more defined look. It is important to remember that a tummy tuck is not a weight loss procedure and may not be a suitable procedure for everyone.

Crowns (Dental)

Crowns, which are also sometimes called caps, are carefully fitted sleeves that sit over an existing tooth in order to protect it from further damage or to improve your smile. Often applied as part of a root canal treatment, they can also hold together teeth that are cracked and support bridges. Not only this, they can also be used to cover and improve the look of teeth that have become discolored.

Dental implants (Dental)

Unlike other tooth replacement procedures, implants actually help promote healthy bone growth as they are osteoconducive. Generally, it is a small surgical procedure, carried out under local anaesthetic, in which a titanium screw will be fitted into your jaw. Dental implants are usually used where patients have more than one missing tooth and using a bridge is no longer possible.

Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammaplasty)

Although there are many women looking to make their breasts larger, there are an equal number of women looking to have their breasts reduced as the extra weight can be a burden physically or they are just simply uncomfortable having such large breasts. During a breast reduction operation excess skin and breast tissue is removed and the remaining breast tissue is used to form the shape of the breast.

Breast Implants

Not all of us are endowed with large breasts and for some of us this can lead to low self esteem and confidence. Having an implant is one way you can increase the size of your breasts. At Ames, we use implants in a variety of cups manufactured by Motiva, Mentor as well as polytech.
