Female Genital Cosmetic Surgery
Introduction

The world of female cosmetic genital surgery is one of the fastest growing specialities in the area of gynecology and includes procedures and treatments designed to change certain aspects of female genitalia either asthetically or purely for medical purposes. There are many reasons as to why someone may wish to undergo such surgery ranging from the need to address certain defects that may have been present since birth to addressing a particular aesthetic issue; even the act of giving birth can change the physical appearance of the vagina and all of these can have traumatic effects on the self esteem of the individual affected. At Ames, we have a number of procedures that may help address some of these issues.

Vaginoplasty

Vaginoplasty can take on many different forms surgically and the type of procedure you recieve really depends on your goals or medical needs and may include the reconstruction or recreation of the vaginia using a multitude of techniques. Vaginoplasty is often sought after by those who are seeking to address defects caused by birth or trauma in order to improve sexual function as well as by those who need vaginal reconstruction after undergoing radiation therapy for cancer and other conditions. Vaginoplasty is also used to help address congenital abnormailities which may have affected the development of the vagina.

Who İs A Good Candidate For The Procedure?

Vaginoplasty is a procedure that can help women improve both the appearance and functionality of their vagina. It's important to note that ideal candidates for this procedure are those who are in good overall health, have realistic expectations, and consult with a qualified plastic surgeon. By doing so, they can assess their individual needs and determine if they are suitable candidates for vaginoplasty. There are various reasons why women seek out vaginoplasty. One common reason is for women who have given birth naturally and may have experienced a loosening of the vaginal canal. Additionally, women who have mild urinary incontinence, such as leaking urine when sneezing, laughing, or coughing, may also consider vaginoplasty. Other reasons include women experiencing vaginal dryness, vaginal laxity due to age, weight changes, or genetics, and women who are seeking to improve their self-esteem or satisfaction in the bedroom.

The Procedure

Before undergoing vaginoplasty, patients have a comprehensive consultation with their surgeon. During this consultation, the surgeon reviews the patient's medical history, does a physical examination, and discusses the patient's goals and expectations. This stage is crucial because it helps establish a personalized surgical plan. Vaginoplasty is typically performed under general anesthesia to ensure the patient's comfort and safety during the surgery. The surgical process involves several steps. First, the surgeon creates precise incisions inside the vagina to access the targeted areas. Then, the vaginal muscles are tightened by removing excess tissue and suturing the muscles together. This process aims to restore strength and tightness to the vaginal canal. Additionally, if a patient desires further enhancement, labiaplasty, which involves reshaping and resizing the labia minora or majora, can be performed at the same time as vaginoplasty

Post-op care

• You should expect some swelling of the labia for up to 6-8 weeks post-op.
• Drink plenty of fluids.
• Avoid sitting and standing for long periods of time.
• For the first month post-op sitting may be uncomfortable. Try to use a donut cushion when sitting for any length of time.
• Brownish yellow vaginal discharge is normal for the first 4-6 weeks post-op.
• Bleeding should be expected for the first 8 weeks.
• Apply an ice pack or frozen peas wrapped in a clean cloth to the area for 20 minutes every hour for the first week to assist with swelling.
• Avoid activities like swimming and riding a bicycle for 3 months post-op.
• You may shower after your first visit or as directed by our surgeons. Be sure to pat the area dry and do NOT rub the area.
• Wash or shower Daily and when doing so clean from the front to the back as to avoid contamination and further infection from the anal area.

• Avoid tight fitting clothing.

Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty - also known as labial reduction - is a form of plastic surgery that seeks to alter either the labia minora (the inner labia) or Labia majora (the outher labia) both of which are folds of skin surrounding the vulva. The procedure itself involves the shortening and reshaping of the labia by surgically removing unwanted tissue. This type of procedure is common among those who have congenital defects or experience discomfort during intercourse or simply for those who are unhappy with the physical appearance of having larger labia.

Who is a good candidate for the procedure?

It's important to remember that there is no "normal" length for the labia. The average size is about one inch, but there's a wide range of variations. After giving birth, many women experience changes in the size and shape of their labia. If you're feeling discomfort and chafing, labiaplasty could be an option for you. Good candidates for this procedure are typically at least 18 years old, in good health, and have a positive outlook. They may also have tears in the labia from childbirth or feel uncomfortable during activities like exercise or intercourse. It's all about finding what makes you feel comfortable and confident in your own body.

The Procedure

The duration of the procedure depends on your specific treatment plan. There are two main types of labiaplasty: labia majora reduction and labia minora reduction. The trim technique removes excess skin around the outer edge of the labia, while the wedge technique removes a v-shaped "wedge" from the labia and stitches the edges together. Complimentary procedures like clitoral hood reduction, mons pubis liposuction, and Viveve (a nonsurgical vaginal tightening treatment) can also be done. The Trim-V procedure combines labia minora reduction with clitoral hood reduction for a more seamless result.

Post-op care

  • • Be sure to take the medicine you were prescribed until it is complete.
  • • For the first 24 hours, try to remain in bed and only get up to use the toilet (with assitance).
  • • Walk around for 2-3 minute intervals every 2 hours the day after your procedure.
  • • Do not shower for the first 48 hours.
  • • When drying the area, make sure you do so by patting the area dry with a clean cloth. Do NOT rub the area.
  • • After using the toilet, use a pritzer bottle of clean water to cleanse the area.
  • • Do not submerge the wound under water until the scars have healed completely and there is no longer any scabbing.
  • • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • • There will be an increase in swelling and considerable discomfort fort he first 3 days or so; this is normal and should go down after that.
  • • You may ice the area with a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a clean cloth.

Patients who had labiaplasty or vaginoplasty done with us also had some of the following done too. Contact one of our experienced patient coordinators to see what procedures would be best suited to you.

Liposuction

As we age, lose weight or after we give birth, we may find certain pockets of fat are harder to remove than others through exercise and diet alone. Liposuction can help remove this fat by extracting it with a very strong vacuum. Outside of traditional liposuction, we also provide vaser liposuction which uses ultrasonic waves first to breakdown fat cells before extracting them. This often leads to less damage being done to the remaining tissue and thus enabling a quicker recovery time. Liposuction is a procedure which can be performed on all body parts.

Tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Some of us are left with an excess of skin around our tummy area after losing a lot of weight or giving birth. As this skin cannot be lost through exercise or diet alone, a ‘tummy tuck’ can be used to surgically remove the excess skin to give your tummy a thinner more defined look. It is important to remember that a tummy tuck is not a weight loss procedure and may not be a suitable procedure for everyone.

Crowns (Dental)

Crowns, which are also sometimes called caps, are carefully fitted sleeves that sit over an existing tooth in order to protect it from further damage or to improve your smile. Often applied as part of a root canal treatment, they can also hold together teeth that are cracked and support bridges. Not only this, they can also be used to cover and improve the look of teeth that have become discolored.

Dental implants (Dental)

Unlike other tooth replacement procedures, implants actually help promote healthy bone growth as they are osteoconducive. Generally, it is a small surgical procedure, carried out under local anaesthetic, in which a titanium screw will be fitted into your jaw. Dental implants are usually used where patients have more than one missing tooth and using a bridge is no longer possible.

Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammaplasty)

Although there are many women looking to make their breasts larger, there are an equal number of women looking to have their breasts reduced as the extra weight can be a burden physically or they are just simply uncomfortable having such large breasts. During a breast reduction operation excess skin and breast tissue is removed and the remaining breast tissue is used to form the shape of the breast.

Breast Implants

Not all of us are endowed with large breasts and for some of us this can lead to low self esteem and confidence. Having an implant is one way you can increase the size of your breasts. At Ames, we use implants in a variety of cups manufactured by Motiva, Mentor as well as polytech.
